The Course

The Postgraduate Program on Ecology (Masters) includes studies regarding the factors that generate and maintain the biodiversity, especially for northeast Brazil ecosystems, as well as aspects related to the growing threats to the biodiversity. The Program focus the ecosystems’ functioning and the relation between humans and nature, and has received international students (e.g. from Portugal, Colombia, Argentina and Chile.

 

How to apply

Students apply through the participation in the selection process that is available once or twice a year, generally around October and June. The selection includes a test on ecology, a test on English and an interview.

 

Duration and requirements:

The Master course lasts 24 months and the student must have 40 credits (24 from the disciplines and 16 corresponding to the dissertation itself). In order to qualify for the diploma, the student must:

a) Have all the 24 credits from the disciplines;

b) Be approved in the English test;

c) Be approved in the public defense of the dissertation;

d) Send the final version of the dissertation according to the deadline described on Article 52º of the Internal rules;

e) Prove the submission of one manuscript to a scientific journal (impact factor according to the internal rules).

 

Fellowship:

Fellowships from CAPES, CNPq and FACEPE (Brazilian institutions of science financial support) are distributed according to the internal rules. Fellowships are coordinated by the Fellowship Commission, whose assignments are:

a) To establish and execute the criteria used to distribute and maintain the fellowships;

b) To establish the parameters of fellowships’ distribution during the first semester of the course;

c) To analyze the students’ half-yearly reports;

d) To evaluate the students’ performance by the end of each semester;

e) To cease, reactivate, substitute or cancel the fellowships (according to the student performance).

Advisors’ registration:

The criteria used for advisors’ enrolment, re-enrolment and qualification can be found at Chapter 2 of the internal rules.

 

Disciplines:

The student must attend 40 credits (during 24 months at maximum), from which 24 credits are related to the disciplines and 16 related to the dissertation text.

 

Distinctions

Aside being relatively new, the Masters on Ecology have some particularities that make it distinct from other Brazilian Masters in Ecology:

1- The geographical area used by advisors in their scientific projects includes several morph climatic domains, such as Atlantic Forest (including seasonal forest, ombrophilous forest, coastal sand vegetation, upland forests) and dry forest (Caatinga), and several climates as well (As', BSHw, BSHw', BSHs', Cw'a, Cs'a), thus offering excellent opportunities for the investigation of ecological patterns variations in different environmental situations. The projects focus, therefore, on Bazilian NE region, from the littoral to the interior, including aquatic ecosystems.

2- The Program has an excellent infrastructure of laboratories, classroom, administrative office and two rooms exclusive for students: informatics laboratory and sociability room. Four university stations are also available to the Program studies: Tapacurá Ecological Station, Station for Studies on Migratory Birds and Environmental Resources, Experimental Station of Small Animals and Sugar Cane Experimental Station. Aside the advisors’ labs, the university has two communitarian labs that allow the use of precision equipment.

3- Some Program’s advisors are nationally known because of their scientific production, and 40% of the advisors receive a scientific production fellowship that is awarded by Brazilian government only for scientists that have a regularly high scientific production.

4- The Program has an efficient mechanism to obtain government fellowships for postgraduate students. All qualified students use to receive fellowships.

5- The advisors have national and international scientific partnerships, favoring the integration of students in those scientific nets;

6- The research lines allow the development of studies that contribute with Brazilian social-economic development (specially the NE region) and collaborate with environmental management and conservation;
